Irony

Irony

Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. In other words it's the opposite of what we are thinking.

An example of Irony is a poem by Arlington Robinson called "Richard Cory." In the poem the narrator portrays Richard Cory to be a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim. also that he was rich, richer than a king and glittered when he walked. "And he was rich--yes, richer than a king-- And admirably schooled in every grace: in fine, we thought he was everything, to make us wish that we were in his place." quote from the Richard Cory poem. This poem is ironic because the way how people portrayed Richard Cory to be, they would have never known that he was an unhappy guy and would have killed himself.

Irony was also used in the short story "The Monkeys Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. Irony was a major part of this story because when Sargent Major Morris came with the monkey paw and told the white family what it could do, and the consequences behind it, the white family still wanted it. While they made there first wish, they asked for Two hundred pounds, not knowing when there going to get it. One day there son Herbert white went to work. while waiting for his return, a mysterious man who was well dressed was trying to find a way to tell Mr and Mrs white that there son has died. While the man gave them the bad news, he also said" in consideration of your son's services they wish to present you with a certain sum as compensation." Mr and Mrs white ask how much the compensation was. the mystious man said two hundred pounds. the Irony in this story is your not going to get what you wish for. for instance while mr white was wish for the two hundred pounds he was not thinking that his sons life would have been taking away for his wish.

There is an article by Gardiner Harris that has Irony in it. In the article it stated that black slaves built the white house. however they weren't aloud to go in the white house unless they were servant or famous guest. Even though they were famous guest there was still a problem for them to go to the white house. now president Obama and his family now lives in the whit house. basically the Irony of the article is that even thought the slaves built the white house black people weren't allowed in, but now in modern days there is a black family who lives there.

In this cartoon there is a patient who is about to have surgery. but the ironic thing is that patient has a lot of tattoos and piercings on the body and she is afraid of getting surgery.

Ironic things can fool many people. theres many things people would see or hear and would not know. For instance "the monkey paw" by w.w.jacobs and the "Richard Cory" peom by Edwin Arlington Robinson. Two similar story's in which how irony played with there minds. Then the the white house article by Gardiner Harris has irony in it.
